Water wars, oil wars, climate change, global warming, A personal view

I try to avoid the ‘did we cause it?’ argument about global warming because there is an underlying religious context to the side of the argument that says: No way we caused it. Essentially, if the Christian Right admits that we screwed up the planet by burning too many fossil fuels then their belief in the supremacy of man will be threatened.
This is totally crazy in the sense that it equates to sitting in a burning building and waiting for God to put the fire out. This stubborn denial of reality, for so-called religious reasons, goes all the way to the top. The bush administration has a policy of denying any relationship between us and the problem.
To maintain this policy requires them to take no steps whatsoever to deal with climate change because to do so would be to admit they were wrong. Which, of course, they are incapable of doing. Take an incredibly obvious step like requiring high fuel efficiency standards for all vehicles. This is the kind of action only a government can take. Instead we reward car makers for making huge trucks and SUVs and selling them to people who almost never have more than one person in the vehicle.
Ford just released its earning and sales were down 35% because, to their surprise, people aren’t buying their previous cash cows, the aforesaid SUVs and trucks. You have to wonder if their executives ever check gas prices…of course the President hasn’t pumped a tank of gas in a long time.
Their solution? Maybe the ‘End Time’ will come and they’ll end up in heaven where everyone drives SUVs and they never need gas. You know, right down the road from "Paradise’ with its multitudes of virgins and young Islamic idealists….
